[ARCADE RACING HISTORY]

F1 (Atari 1976)

"F1", 1976 driving game, manufactured by Atari and designed by Namco.
This is not a videogame, the images were displayed on the screen
(this would not be a television screen. but one similar to those used on movie theatres)
by a projection lamp optics system, the animations were electro-mechanical and controlled
by a PC board module.
Between 1976 and 1981 "3D" driving videogames graphics were too primitive, and for this reason,
machines like "F1" would present a much better alternative in terms of graphics realism.
Naturally, this sort of machines bacame obsolete with 1982 "Pole Position", a videogame
that possessed high-quality realist graphics (relative to existing games of course).
This game is documented here merely as an example, to show that this type of
electro-mechanical machines was better than video games at the time.
