1 Introduction

lsnes is SNES rerecording emulator based on bsnes core.

3 Building

• Copy bsnes sources (the bsnes subdirectory) to subdirectory 
  'bsnes' (for bsnes core).

• Copy gambatte sources to subdirectory 'gambatte' (for gambatte 
  core).

• Patch the bsnes sources with included patches (directory 
  'bsnes-patches/<version>', bsnes core)

• Patch the gambatte sources with included patches (directory 
  'gambatte-patches/<version>', gambatte core)

• Edit options.build (or copy of that file)

• Run make (passing 'OPTIONS=<filename>' if using something else 
  than options.build).

4 Command line options

4.1 ROM options

4.1.1 --rom=<file> (lsnes/SDL, lsnes-avidump)

Load <file> as ROM.

4.2 Session options

4.2.1 --pause

Start paused

4.2.2 <filename> (lsnes/SDL, lsnes-avidump, movieinfo)

Load <filename> as movie or savestate file. All other session 
options are ignored.

4.2.3 --port1=<device> (lsnes/SDL, bsnes core only)

Set type of port1. Valid values are:

• none: No device connected

• gamepad: One gamepad (the default)

• multitap: Four gamepads (warning: makes most games refuse to 
  start)

• mouse: Mouse.

4.2.4 --port2=<type> (lsnes/SDL, bsnes core only)

Set type of port2. Valid values are:

• none: No device connected (the default)

• gamepad: One gamepad

• multitap: Four gamepads.

• mouse: Mouse

• superscope: Super Scope

• justifier: One justifier

• justifiers: Two justifiers

4.2.5 --gamename=<name> (lsnes/SDL)

Set the name of game to <name>. Default is blank.

4.2.6 --author=<name> (lsnes/SDL)

Add author with full name of <name> (no nickname).

4.2.7 --author=|<name> (lsnes/SDL)

Add author with nickname of <name> (no full name).

4.2.8 --author=<fullname>|<nickname> (lsnes/SDL)

Add author with full name of <fullname> and nickname of 
<nickname>.

4.2.9 --rtc-second=<value> (lsnes/SDL)

Set RTC second (0 is 1st January 1970 00:00:00Z). Default is 
1,000,000,000.

4.2.10 --rtc-subsecond=<value> (lsnes/SDL)

Set RTC subsecond. Range is 0-. Unit is CPU cycle. Default is 0.

4.2.11 --anchor-savestate=<file> (lsnes/SDL)

Set the anchor savestate file.

4.3 Misc. options:

4.3.1 --run=<file> (lsnes/SDL)

After running main RC file, run this file. If multiple are 
specified, these execute in order specified.

4.4 dump options (lsnes-dumpavi only)

4.4.1 --dumper=<dumper>

Set the dumper to use (required). Use 'list' for listing of known 
dumpers.

4.4.2 --mode=<mode>

Set the mode to use (required for dumpers with multiple modes, 
forbidden otherwise). Use 'list' for known modes.

4.4.3 --prefix=<prefix>

Set dump prefix. Default is “avidump”.

4.4.4 --option=<name>=<value>

Set option <name> to value <value>.

4.4.5 --length=<length>

Set number of frames to dump. Mandatory.

4.4.6 --lua=<script>

Run specified lua script (lsnes-dumpavi does not have 
initialization files).

4.4.7 --load-library=<library>

Load the specified shared object / dynamic library / dynamic link 
library.

5 Startup file lsnes.rc

Upon startup, lsnes (lsnes/SDL only) executes file lsnes.rc as 
commands. This file is located in:

• Windows: %APPDATA%\lsnes\lsnes.rc (if %APPDATA% exists)

• Unix: $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/lsnes/lsnes.rc (if $XDG_CONFIG_HOME 
  exists)

• Unix: $HOME/.config/lsnes/lsnes.rc (if $HOME exists)

• All: ./lsnes.rc (fallback default).

If leading directories do not exist, attempt to create them is 
made.

6 Internal commands

• Commands beginning with '*' invoke the corresponding command 
  without alias expansion.

• If command starts with '+' (after possible '*'), the command is 
  executed as-is when button is pressed, and when button is 
  released, it is executed with '+' replaced by '-'.

• Commands without '+' execute only on negative edge (release).

6.1 Settings:

Settings control various aspects of emulator behaviour.

6.1.1 set-setting <setting> <value>

Sets setting <setting> to value <value> (may be empty).

6.1.2 unset-setting <setting>

Try to unset setting <setting> (not all settings can be unset).

6.1.3 get-setting <setting>

Read value of setting <setting>

6.1.4 show-settings

Print names and values of all settings.

6.2 Keybindings

Keybindings bind commands or aliases to keys (or pseudo-keys). 

Notes:

• Do not bind edge active (+/-) commands to keys with modifiers, 
  that won't work right!

• Names of keys and modifiers are platform-dependent.

• Be careful before binding pseudo-keys (such as joystick axes, 
  buttons or hats) with modifiers. That may or may not work 
  right.

6.2.1 bind-key [<mod>/<modmask>] <key> <command>

Bind <command> to key <key> (activating if modifiers in <modmask> 
(comma-seperated list) are set as <mod> (comma-seperated list).

The names of keys and modifiers are platform-dependent.

6.2.2 unbind-key [<mod>/<modmask>] <key>

Unbind command from <key> (with specified <mod> and <modmask>).

6.2.3 set-axis <axis> [disabled | axis | axis-inverse | 
  pressure0- | pressure0+ | pressure-0 | pressure-+ | pressure+0 
  | pressure+-] [minus=<val>] [zero=<val>] [plus=<val>] 
  [tolerance=<val>]

Set axis parameters for axis <axis>.

• disabled: Disable axis

• axis: Normal axis

• axis-inverse: Inverse axis

• pressure0-: Pressure sensitive. Released at 0, pressed at -.

• pressure0+: Pressure sensitive. Released at 0, pressed at +.

• pressure-0: Pressure sensitive. Released at -, pressed at 0.

• pressure-+: Pressure sensitive. Released at -, pressed at +.

• pressure+0: Pressure sensitive. Released at +, pressed at 0.

• pressure+-: Pressure sensitive. Released at +, pressed at -.

• minus=<val>: Calibration at extreme minus position 
  (-32768-32767)

• zero=<val>: Calibration at neutral position (-32768-32767)

• plus=<val>: Calibration at extreme plus position (-32768-32767)

• tolerance=<value>: Center band tolerance (0<x<1). The smaller 
  the value, the more sensitive the control is.

6.2.4 show-bindings

Print all key bindings in effect.

6.3 Aliases

Aliases bind command to sequence of commands. After alias has 
been defined, it replaces the command it shadows.

Notes:

• You can't alias command to itself.

• Aliases starting with +/- are edge active just like ordinary 
  commands starting with +/-.

• One command can be aliased to multiple commands.

6.3.1 alias-command <command> <expansion>

Append <expansion> to alias <command>. If alias does not already 
exist, it is created.

6.3.2 unalias-command <command>

Clear alias expansion for <command>.

6.3.3 show-aliases

Print all aliases and their expansions in effect.

6.4 run-script <script>

Run <script> as if commands were entered on the command line.

6.5 Video dumping

Following commands control video dumping:

6.5.1 start-dump <dumper> [<mode>] <prefix/filename>

Start dumping using dumper <dumper>. If mode is present or not 
and if prefix or filename is present depends on the dumper and 
dumper mode.

The following dumpers are available:

• INTERNAL-AVI-CSCD: Internal CSCD in .avi dumper.

  – Mode: uncompressed/pcm: Uncompressed video, PCM audio. Takes 
    prefix.

  – Mode: cscd/pcm: CSCD video, PCM audio. Takes prefix.

• INTERNAL-JMD: Internal .jmd dumper.

  – Does not take mode.

  – Takes a filename.

• INTERNAL-RAW: Internal RAW dumper.

  – Does not take mode.

  – Takes a prefix.

  – Sound is big-endian signed 16-bit, usually at 32040.5Hz.

  – Video is always upscaled to double resolution (512x448 / 512 
    x 478).

  – Video framerate is usually 322445/6448 fps for PAL and 
    10738636/178683 fps for NTSC.

• INTERNAL-SDMP: Internal SDMP dumper.

  – Mode 'ms': Multi-segment. Takes prefix.

  – Mode 'ss': Single-segment. Takes filename.

6.5.2 end-dump <dumper>

End dumping using <dumper>

6.5.3 show-dumpers [<dumper>]

Show the list of dumpers or list of modes for <dumper>

6.6 Memory manipulation

<address> may be decimal or hexadecimal (prefixed with '0x'). 
<value> can be hexadecimal (prefixed with '0x'), unsigned or 
signed (prefixed with '-') decimal.

The available element <sizes> are:

• byte: 1 byte

• word: 2 bytes

• dword: 4 bytes

• qword: 8 bytes

When reading RAM and ROM, multi-byte reads/writes are big-endian. 
When dealing with DSP memory, multi-byte reads/writes are 
native-endian (do not use operand sizes exceeding DSP bitness, 
except dword is OK for 24-bit memory).

6.6.1 read-<size> <address>

Read the value of byte in <address>.

6.6.2 read-s<size> <address>

Read the value of signed byte in <address>.

6.6.3 write-<size> <address> <value>

Write <value> to byte in address <address>.

6.6.4 search-memory reset

Reset the memory search

6.6.5 search-memory count

Print number of candidates remaining

6.6.6 search-memory print

Print all candidates remaining

6.6.7 search-memory <usflag><sizeflag><op>

Searches memory for addresses satisfying criteria.

<usflag> can be:

• u: unsigned

• s: signed

<sizeflag> can be:

• b: byte

• w: word

• d: dword

• q: qword

<op> can be:

• lt: < previous value.

• le: <= previous value.

• eq: = previous value.

• ne: != previous value.

• ge: >= previous value.

• gt: > previous value.

6.6.8 search-memory <sizeflag> <value>

Searches for addresses that currently have value <value>. 
<sizeflag> is as in previous command.

6.7 Main commands

These commands are not available in lsnesrc, but are available 
after ROM has been loaded.

6.7.1 quit-emulator [/y]

Quits the emulator (asking for confirmation). If /y is given, no 
confirmation is asked.

6.7.2 pause-emulator

Toggle paused/unpaused

6.7.3 +advance-frame 

Advance frame. If the button is still held after configurable 
timeout expires, game unpauses for the duration frame advance is 
held.

6.7.4 +advance-poll 

Advance subframe. If the button is still held after configurable 
timeout expires, game unpauses for the duration frame advance is 
held.

6.7.5 advance-skiplag 

Skip to first poll in frame after current.

6.7.6 reset 

Reset the SNES after this frame.

6.7.7 load <filename> 

Load savestate <filename> in current mode.

6.7.8 load-state <filename> 

Load savestate <filename> in readwrite mode.

6.7.9 load-readonly <filename> 

Load savestate <filename> in readonly mode.

6.7.10 load-preserve <filename> 

Load savestate <filename> in readonly mode, preserving current 
events.

6.7.11 load-movie <filename> 

Load savestate <filename>, ignoring save part in readonly mode.

6.7.12 save-state <filename> 

Save system state to <filename> as soon as possible.

6.7.13 save-movie <filename> 

Save movie to <filename>.

6.7.14 set-rwmode 

Set read-write mode.

Press button <button> on controller <num> (1-8). The following

Hold/unhold button <button> on controller <num> (1-8). See

next frame. See +controller for button names.

Cauntion: Does not work properly if outside frame advance.

6.7.28 autofire (<pattern>|-)...

Set autofire pattern. Each parameter is comma-separated list of 
button names (in form of 1start, 1A, 2B, etc..) to hold on that 
frame. After reaching the end of pattern, the pattern restarts 
from the beginning.

6.7.29 repaint

Force a repaint.

6.8 Save jukebox 

6.8.1 cycle-jukebox-backward

Cycle save jukebox backwards.

6.11.7 set-volume <multiplier>dB

Set the volume multiplier to <multiplier> dB. 0 is normal volume, 
and higher numbers are louder. The value may be negative.

6.12 Misc.

6.12.1 reload-rom [<file>]

Reloads the main ROM image from <file>.

6.13 SDL Platform commands 

The following are valid on SDL platform.

6.13.1 identify-key

Asks to press a key and then identifies that (pseudo-)key.

6.13.2 toggle-console 

Toggle between windowed/fullscreen console.

6.13.3 scroll-fullup 

Scroll messages window as far back as it goes.

6.13.4 scroll-fulldown 

Scroll messages window as far forward as it goes.

6.13.5 scroll-up 

Scroll messages window back one screenful.

6.13.6 scroll-down 

Scroll messages window forward one screenful.

6.13.7 prompt-command <command>

Enter command prompt, with prompt prepopulated with specified

7 Settings

7.1 Core settings

7.1.1 firmwarepath

Set where bsnes looks for firmware files. Default is “.”.

7.1.2 target

Set the target . Numeric, range is 0.001 to “infinite”. Default 
is native framerate.

7.1.3 savecompression

Set save compression level (integer 0-9). Default is 7 (0 is no 
compression).

7.1.4 advance-timeout

Set the frame advance timeout in milliseconds. Numeric integer, 
range is 0-999999999. Default is 500.

7.2 AVI dumper settings

7.2.1 avi-large

AVI dumper: Always dump at 512x448 or 512x478 regardless of what 
the console outputs.

7.2.2 avi-left-border

AVI dumper: Set the default left border thickness (unless lua 
overrides) for dumps. Range 0-8191. Default is 0.

7.2.3 avi-right-border

AVI dumper: Set the default right border thickness (unless lua 
overrides) for dumps. Range 0-8191. Default is 0.

7.2.4 avi-top-border

AVI dumper: Set the default top border thickness (unless lua 
overrides) for dumps. Range 0-8191. Default is 0.

7.2.5 avi-bottom-border

AVI dumper: Set the default bottom border thickness (unless lua 
overrides) for dumps. Range 0-8191. Default is 0.

7.2.6 avi-maxframes

AVI dumper: Maximum number of frames per dump segment (0 => 
unlimited). Range 0-999999999. Default is 0.

7.2.7 avi-compresison

AVI dumper: Compression level (0-18).

• Compression levels 10 and above are not compatible with stock 
  CSCD codec.

• Recomended level is 7.

7.2.8 avi-soundrate

AVI dumper: Set method of determining the sound rate.

• 0: Pick nearest of 8, 11.025, 12, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48, 
  64, 88.2, 96, 128, 176.4 and 192 kHz.

• 1: Round down to nearest integer.

• 2: Round up to nearest ingeter.

7.3 JMD options

7.3.1 jmd-copression

JMD dumper: Compression level (0-9).

7.4 SDL platform settings

7.4.1 autorepeat-first-delay

Sets the delay for first character in typematic autorepeat.

7.4.2 autorepeat-subsequent-delay

Sets the delay for subsequent characters in typematic autorepeat.

8 Lua functions

8.1 Core (in main table)

8.1.1 print

Print line to message console.

8.1.2 exec(string command)

Run command as it was entered on the command line

8.1.3 utime()

Returns two values. First is time since some epoch in seconds, 
the second is microseconds mod 10^6 since that epoch.

8.1.4 emulator_ready()

Returns true if emulator has finished booting, false if not 
(on_startup() will be issued later).

8.1.5 set_idle_timeout(number timeout)

Set number of microseconds to block idle for. After this timeout 
has expired, on_idle() will be called once.

8.1.6 set_timer_timeout(number timeout)

Set number of microseconds to block timer for. After this timeout 
has expired, on_timer() will be called once.

8.1.7 bus_address(number snesaddr)

Returns virtual address corresponding to specified address on 
SNES bus.

8.2 Table bit:

Bitwise logical functions and related.

8.2.1 bit.none(number...) / bit.bnot(number...)

48-bit bitwise NOT / NONE function (set bits that are set in none 
of the arguments).

8.2.2 bit.any(number...) / bit.bor(number...)

48-bit bitwise OR / ANY function (set bits that are set in any of 
the arguments).

8.2.3 bit.all(number...) / bit.band(number...)

48-bit bitwise AND / ALL function (set bits that are set in all 
of the arguments).

8.2.4 bit.parity(number...) / bit.bxor(number...)

48-bit bitwise XOR / PARITY function (set bits that are set in 
odd number of the arguments).

8.2.5 bit.lrotate(number base[, number amount[, number bits]])

Rotate bits-bit (max 48, default 48) number left by amount 
(default 1) places.

8.2.6 bit.rrotate(number base[, number amount[, number bits]])

Rotate bits-bit (max 48, default 48) number right by amount 
(default 1) places.

8.2.7 bit.lshift(number base[, number amount[, number bits]])

Shift bits-bit (max 48, default 48) number left by amount 
(default 1) places. The new bits are filled with zeroes.

8.2.8 bit.lrshift(number base[, number amount[, number bits]])

Shift bits-bit (max 48, default 48) number logically right by 
amount (default 1) places. The new bits are filled with zeroes.

8.2.9 bit.arshift(number base[, number amount[, number bits]])

Shift bits-bit (max 48, default 48) number arithmetically right 
by amount (default 1) places. The new bits are shifted in with 
copy of the high bit.

8.2.10 bit.extract(number base[, number bit0[, number bit1,...]])

Returns number that has bit0-th bit as bit 0, bit1-th bit as 1 
and so on.

Notes: 

• Bit numbers up to 51 should work reliably (then things start 
  falling apart due to double precision issues).

• There are two special bit positions, true and false, standing 
  for always set bit and always clear bit.

8.2.11 bit.value([number bit1[, number bit2,...]])

Returns bitwise OR of 1 left shifted by bit1 places, 1 left 
shifted by bit2 places and so on. As special value, nil argument 
is no-op.

8.3 Table gui:

Most of these functions can only be called in on_paint and 
on_video callbacks. Exceptions are noted.

Colors are 32-bit. Bits 0-7 are the blue component, bits 8-15 are 
the green component, bits 16-23 are the red component, bits 24-31 
are alpha component (0 is fully opaque, 255 is almost 
transparent). -1 is the fully transparent color. Alpha values 
greater than 127 do work.

Origin of coordinates is at top left corner of game display area. 
Left and top gaps correspond to negative coordinates.

8.3.1 gui.resolution()

Returns 2-tuple (hresolution, vresolution).

8.3.2 gui.<class>_gap(number gap)

Set the <class> (left, right, top, bottom) gap to specified value 
(max gap is 8191).

8.3.3 gui.text(number x, number y, string text[, number fgc[, 
  number bgc]])

Draw specified text on the GUI (each character cell is 8 or 16 
wide and 16 high). Parameters:

• x: X-coordinate to start the drawing from (and x-coordinate at 
  begining of the lines).

• y: Y-coordinate to start the drawing from.

• text: The text to draw.

• fgc: Text color (default is 0xFFFFFF (white))

• bgc: Background color (default is -1 (transparent))

8.3.4 gui.textH(number x, number y, string text[, number fgc[, 
  number bgc]])

Like gui.text, but draw using double-width.

8.3.5 gui.textV(number x, number y, string text[, number fgc[, 
  number bgc]])

Like gui.text, but draw using double-height.

8.3.6 gui.textHV(number x, number y, string text[, number fgc[, 
  number bgc]])

Like gui.text, but draw using double-width/double-height.

8.3.7 gui.rectangle(number x, number y, number width, number 
  height[, number thickness[, number outline[, number fill]]])

Draw rectangle on the GUI. Parameters:

• x: X-coordinate of left edge.

• y: Y-coordinate of upper edge.

• width: Width of rectangle.

• height: Height of rectangle.

• thickness: Thickness of outline (default is 1).

• outline: Color of outline (default is 0xFFFFFF (white))

• fill: Color of fill (default is -1 (transparent))

8.3.8 gui.box(number x, number y, number width, number height[, 
  number thickness[, number outline1[,number outline2[, number 
  fill]]]])

Draw rectangle with 3D effect on the GUI. Parameters:

• x: X-coordinate of left edge.

• y: Y-coordinate of upper edge.

• width: Width of rectangle.

• height: Height of rectangle.

• thickness: Thickness of outline (default is 1).

• outline1: First color of outline (default is 0xFFFFFF (white))

• outline2: First color of outline (default is 0x808080 (dark 
  gray))

• fill: Color of fill (default is 0xC0C0C0 (light grayy))

8.3.9 gui.pixel(number x, number y[, number color])

Draw one pixel on the GUI. Parameters:

• x: X-coordinate of the pixel

• y: Y-coordinate of the pixel

• color: Color of the pixel (default is 0xFFFFFF (white))

8.3.10 gui.crosshair(number x, number y[, number length[, number 
  color]])

Draw a crosshair. Parameters:

• x: X-coordinate of the crosshair

• y: Y-coordinate of the crosshair

• length: Length of the crosshair lines (default 10).

• color: Color of the crosshair (default is 0xFFFFFF (white))

8.3.11 gui.line(number x1, number y1, number x2, number y2[, 
  number color])

Draw a thin line. Parameters:

• x1: X-coordinate of one end.

• y1: Y-coordinate of one end.

• x2: X-coordinate of the other end.

• y2: Y-coordinate of the other end.

• color: Color of the line (default is 0xFFFFFF (white)).

8.3.12 gui.circle(number x, number y, number r[, number thick[, 
  number border[, number fil]]])

Draw a circle. Parameters.

• x: X-coordinate of the center

• y: Y-coordinate of the center

• r: The radius of the circle

• thick: Border thickness

• border: Border color (default is 0xFFFFFF (white))

• fill: Fill color (default is -1 (transparent)).

8.3.13 gui.bitmap_draw(number x, number y, bitmap bitmap, palette 
  palette)

Draw a bitmap on screen with specified palette. Parameters:

8.3.24 gui.screenshot(string filename)

Write PNG screenshot of the current frame (no drawings) to 
specified file. Can be used anywhere.

8.3.25 gui.color(number r, number g, number b[, number a])

Returns color (in notation Lua scripts use) corresponding to 
color (r,g,b), each component in scale 0-255. If a is specified, 
that is alpha (0 is fully transparent, 256(sic) is fully opaque). 
The default alpha is 256.

8.3.26 gui.status(string name, string value)

Set status field “L[<name>]” to <value> in status area. Can be 
used anywhere.

8.3.27 gui.rainbow(number step, number steps[, number color])

Perform hue rotation of color <color> (default bright red), by 
<step> steps. The number of steps per full rotation is given by 
absolute value of <steps>.

If <steps> is negative, the rotation will be counterclockwise.

8.4 table input

Input handling. Only available in on_input callback.

8.4.1 input.get(number controller, number index)

Read the specified index (0-11) from specified controller (0-7). 
Notes:

• Uses physical controller numbering. Gamepad in port 2 is 
  controller 4, not 1!

8.4.2 input.set(number controller, number index, number value)

Write the specified index (0-11) from specified controller (0-7), 
storing value. Notes:

8.4.3 input.geta(number controller)

Get input state for entiere controller. Returns 13 return values.

• 1st return value: Bitmask: bit i is set if i:th index is

Set state for entiere controller. args is up to 12 values for 
indices (overriding values in bitmask if specified).

8.4.5 input.controllertype(number controller)

Get the type of controller as string. Valid values are:

8.4.6 input.reset([number cycles])

Execute reset. If cycles is greater than zero, do delayed reset. 
0 (or no value) causes immediate reset.

• Only available with subframe flag false.

8.4.7 input.raw()

Returns table of tables of all available keys and axes. The first 
table is indexed by key name (platform-dependent!), and the inner 
table has the following fields:

• last_rawval: Last reported raw value for control.

• ktype: Type of key (disabled, key, mouse, axis, axis-inverse, 
  hat, pressure-m0, pressure-mp, pressure-0m, pressure-0p, 
  pressure-pm, pressure-p0).

• cal_left: Minimum calibration value. Only meaningful with axis 
  and pressure types.

• cal_center: Center calibration value. Only meaningful with axis 
  and pressure types.

• cal_right: Maximum calibration value. Only meaningful with axis 
  and pressure types.

• cal_tolerance: Dead zone tolerance. Only meaningful with axis

8.4.8 input.keyhook(key, state)

Requests that keyhook events to be sent for key (state=true) or

Host memory handling (extra memory saved to savestates). Host

Read specifed subframe in specified frame and return data as 
array (100 elements, numbered 0-99 currently).

8.6.7 movie.unsafe_rewind([UNSAFEREWIND state])

Start setting point for unsafe rewind or jump to point of unsafe 
rewind.

• If called without argument, causes emulator to start process of 
  setting unsafe rewind point. When this has finished, callback 
  on_set_rewind occurs, passing the rewind state to lua script.

• If called with argument, causes emulator rewind to passed 
  rewind point as soon as possible. Readwrite mode is implicitly 
  activated.

The following warnings apply to unsafe rewinding:

• There are no safety checks against misuse (that's what “unsafe” 
  comes from)!

• Only call rewind from timeline rewind point was set from.

• Only call rewind from after the rewind point was set.

8.7 Table settings

Routines for settings manipulation

8.7.1 settings.get(string name)

Get value of setting. If setting is blank, returns false. If 
setting value can't be obtained, returns (nil, error message).

8.7.2 settings.set(string name, string value)

Set value of setting. If setting can't be set, returns (nil, 
error message).

8.7.3 settings.is_set(string name)

Returns if setting is set. If setting does not exist, returns 
(nil, error message).

8.7.4 settings.blank(string name)

Blanks a setting and returns true. If setting can't be blanked, 
returns (nil, error message).

8.8 Table memory

Contains various functions for managing memory

8.8.1 memory.vma_count()

Returns the number of VMAs

8.8.2 memory.read_vma(number index)

Reads the specified VMA (indices start from zero). Trying to read 
invalid VMA gives nil. The read VMA is table with the following 
fields:

• region_name (string): The readable name of the VMA

• baseaddr (number): Base address of the VMA

• lastaddr (number): Last address in the VMA.

• size (number): The size of VMA in bytes.

• readonly (boolean): True of the VMA corresponds to ROM.

• iospace (boolean): True if the VMA is I/O space.

• native_endian (boolean): True if the VMA has native endian as 
  opposed to little endian.

8.8.3 memory.find_vma(number address)

Finds the VMA containing specified address. Returns table in the 
same format as read_vma or nil if not found.

8.8.4 memory.readbyte(number address)

Reads the specified address as unsigned byte and returns the 
result.

Reads the specified address as signed byte and returns the

Called when screen is being painted. Any gui.* calls requiring 
graphic context draw on the screen.

not_synth is true if this hook is being called in response to 
received frame, false otherwise.

8.10.2 Callback: on_video()

Called when video dump frame is being painted. Any gui.* calls 
requiring graphic context draw on the video.

8.10.3 Callback: on_frame_emulated()

Called when emulating frame has completed and 
on_paint()/on_video() calls are about to be issued.

8.10.4 Callback: on_frame()

Called on each starting whole frame.

8.10.5 Callback: on_startup()

Called when the emulator is starting (lsnes.rc and --run files 
has been run).

Called each time bsnes asks for input. The value is the final 
value to be sent to bsnes core (readonly mode, autohold and 
autofire have been taken into account). Might be useful when 
translating movies to format suitable for console verification. 
Note: There is no way to modify the value to be sent.

8.10.18 Callback: on_keyhook(string keyname, table state)

Sent when key that has keyhook events requested changes state. 
Keyname is name of the key (group) and state is the state (same

The actual input track, one line per subframe (blank lines are 
skipped).

• If the first byte of each line is '.', ' ', <tab> or '|', then

• First subframe must start a new frame.

Length of movie in frames is number of lines in input file that 
start a new frame.

11.21 Member: rerecords

Contains textual base-10 rerecord count (as one line; emulator 
just writes this, it doesn't read it) + 1.

11.22 Member: rrdata

This member stores set of load IDs. There is one load ID per 
rerecord (plus one corresponding to start of project).

• This member constists of concatenation of records

• Each record is 2-36 bytes long and can represent 1-16,843,009 
  consequtive IDs.

• IDs are interpretted as 256-bit big-endian integers with 
  warparound.

• Initial predicted ID is all zeroes.

Format of each record is:

• 1 byte: Opcode byte. Bits 0-4 are prefix length (prefixlen), 
  bits 5-6 are count length (countlen). Bit 7 is unused.

• 32-prefixlen bytes of ID.

• countlen bytes of big-endian count (count).

Records are processed as follows:

• To form the first ID encoded by record, take the first 
  prefixlen bytes predicted ID and append the read ID value to 
  it. The result is the first ID encoded.

• If countlen is 0, record encodes 1 ID.

• If countlen is 1, record encodes 2+count IDs.

• If countlen is 2, record encodes 258+count IDs.

• If countlen is 3, record encodes 65794+count IDs.

• The new predicted ID is the next ID after last one encoded by 
  the record.

The number of rerecords + 1 is equal to the sum of number of IDs 
encoded by all records.

11.23 Member: starttime.second

Movie starting time, second part. Epoch is Unix epoch. Default is 
1,000,000,000.

11.24 Member: starttime.subsecond

Movie starting time, subsecond part. Unit is CPU clocks. Default

12 Known ROM extensions

13 Gamepack files

• The first line must be: “[GAMEPACK FILE]”.

• There is one needed line: “type <systype>”. This sets system 
  type to <systype>. The following system types are valid:

  – snes (SNES)

  – bsx (BS-X non-slotted)

  – bsxslotted (BS-X slotted)

  – sufamiturbo (Sufami Turbo)

  – sgb (Super Game Boy)

  – dmg (Game Boy)

• ROM markup can be loaded as: “xml <type> <file>”. The types

• Patches can be loaded as “patch[<offset>] <type> <file>”. The

  – Offset is given in form [+-]<number>. Usually offset is 
    either +0 or -512.

  – Default offset is +0.

1. Start the emulator and load the ROM and movie file.

2. Set large AVI option 'set-setting avi-large on'

3. Enable dumping 'dump-avi tmpdump' 

4. Unpause and let it run until you want to end dumping.

5. Close the emulator (closing the window is the easiest way). Or 
  use 'end-avi'.

6. For each tmpdump*.avi file created, on command prompt, do 
  'x264 --crf 10 -o tmpdump_<numbers>.mkv tmpdump_<numbers>.avi'.

7. Do 'sox tmpdump.sox tmpdump.ogg rate -v 32000'

8. Do 'mkvmerge -o tmpdump_video.mkv tmpdump_0000000.mkv + 
  tmpdump_0000001.mkv + tmpdump_0000002.mkv' (list every 
  tmpdump_<numbers>.mkv, with + in between).

9. Do 'mkvmerge -o final.mkv tmpdump_video.mkv tmpdump.ogg'. Now
