vDosPlus XyWrite installer
==========================
This vDosPlus XyWrite installer Centennial Edition is based on a special vDosPlus build made at the XyWrite community's request celebrating Finlands 100th anniversary as an independent state, hence the name.

The special vDosPlus build contained herein is fully compliant with Jos Schaars' vDos shareware protection scheme. See full licensing terms below. This version can be easily installed on top of any previous version/build of vDosPlus XyWrite using restore settings to keep your current settings.

The 'vDosPlus XyWrite' solution provides a virtual environment that emulates DOS for use with DOS versions of programs of the XyWrite family: XyWrite 3 or 4, NotaBene 3 or later, and IBM/XyQuest Signature. This means that you can run these DOS programs even under modern 64-bit versions of Windows which are incompatible with DOS programs. You can, Of course, run the vDosPlus environment under a 32-bit version of Windows, too. You need Windows 2000 or later to install and run 'vDosPlus XyWrite'. Please note that even a Windows 2000 or XP virtual machine (e.g. a VirtualBox instance) can be used as the platform to run vDosPlus.

Licensing terms
---------------
The user is only permitted to use the vDosPlus.exe supplied in the context of this vDosPlus XyWrite package. Furthermore, replacing the executable supplied by another version of vDosPlus that does not have Jos Schaars' vDos shareware protection scheme included is strictly prohibited by virtue of the licensing agreement the user enters upon when installing this package. By installing this package the user acknowledges reading these licensing terms and agrees to comply with them. If you cannot accept these terms, please refrain from installing and using this package.

While this package is offered free of charge, please consider donating to vDos (http://www.vdos.info/) and vDosPlus (http://www.vdosplus.org/) projects to ensure continued development of vDos-based solutions, or registering vDos at the generous terms offered by Jos Schaars (https://www.vdos.info/register.html) to get rid of the nag screen when used on a network or domain.

Updating vDosPlus XyWrite
-------------------------
As a general rule, you can update vDosPlus XyWrite to a newer version by running the installer in the same folder which contains your previous installation. By ticking the Restore settings option, you can keep your previous settings. Your previous custom AUTOEXEC.TXT and CONFIG.TXT files are backed up during every installation when you install in the same folder. The uninstaller also preserves your AUTOEXEC.TXT and CONFIG.TXT files and their backup files.

The restore settings feature is based on the difference between static comments provided by the installer and changing user settings. When you select Restore settings, a default template of the new version's config.txt (config_d.txt) is populated with your previous settings. New settings introduced in the newer version remain unchanged (default) as there are no previous values. All static comments are updated to the new default version every time the installer is run. This means that the documentation contained in config.txt is always up-to-date. On the downside, permanent user comments in config.txt are not supported. All comments in config.txt are OVERWRITTEN every time you use the installer. Use the system notes file (sysnotes.txt) for your own notes. See the readme_first.txt for more details after running the installation program. Please note that SYSNOTES.TXT is now handled differently from previous versions. If you want the newest SYSNOTES.TXT installed automatically (and have not customized it!), you can let the installer overwrite it. When overwriting sysnotes.txt, your previous (maybe customized) version will be backed up. If you choose not to overwrite, SYSNOTES.NEW always contains the current default version.

Restore settings produces four output files: an AUTOEXEC.TXT with some of your previous options restored, the CONFIG.TXT proper with restored settings, a CONFIG_D.TXT, which contains the vDosPlus XyWrite default settings, and CONFIG_C.TXT, a non-verbose version of config.txt which has only the current settings in alphabetical order. If you are running the vDosPlus XyWrite installer in an empty folder for the first time, selecting Restore settings produces the concise CONFIG_C.TXT file even when there is nothing to restore (CONFIG_C.TXT is a by-product of the Restore settngs process). Rerunning the installer with restore enabled can fix your config.txt for missing directives and explanatory matter accidentally deleted. Or you can reset your config.txt to installer defaults when restore is not enabled. Equally deleting your AUTOEXEC.TXT and AUTOEXEC.BAK files and rerunning the installer can update it to its current defaults.

Checking vDosPlus version
-------------------------
You can check the version of your vDosPlus installation from 'Start menu, vDosPlus XyWrite, Download updates, Installed version' or by issuing the VER /R command at the DOS prompt. If you are using an application window with frames, you can also check the current version from the 'About vDosPlus...' option in the system menu that opens from the icon on the title bar. Check the manual for version numbering details and update instructions. You can check for update availability at the sites listed in the 'Download updates' menu option.
