Welcome to the readme file.

TNZS-EMU was written by Richard Mitton (richard.mitton@bigfoot.com).

*NOTE* The (non-working) ROM set used for TNZS-EMU 1.x is no longer
       supported. You can download the new (working) set from most major
       emulator web-sites.

About TNZS-EMU
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This emulator is intended to replicate the original arcade machine called
The New Zealand Story. This classic game was released in 1988 by Taito. It is
a shame that Taito never bothered to release a PC version of it, so we have to
put up with this emulator instead. I hope you all enjoy this game :-)
How to run it
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Firstly, obtain your ROM images. You can do this by using a ROM reader/burner
on the microchips from the arcade PCB's. If you do not have a ROM reader,
it is possible to download the ROM files from the Internet.

If you don't have a PCB, then you're not legally entitled to own the ROM
images, so you can't run the emulator. Sorry. Don't bug me about it.
Of course, you could always download the ROMs from the Internet, but that
would be illegal.

You then need to put the ROM files into a subdirectory. Depending on which
ROM set you have, you need a different directory name.
You must un-zip them first! Use WinZip or something.

See GAMELIST.TXT for the directory/ROM filenames.

Once you have the ROMs in their directories, type 'TNZSEMU' to run it.

You can also run a game from the command line by doing 'TNZSEMU gamename'.
You should also do this if your graphics card can't handle the GUI.

Keys & joystick controls
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To change the keys, go to Options, and click on the box with the key you
want to change, then press the new key.
Standard keys:
Movement        = arrow keys
Fire            = CTRL
Jump            = ALT
Player 1 start  = 1
Player 2 start  = 2
Insert coin     = 3
Quit            = ESC
Pause           = P
Screen-grab     = F12
A standard 2-button joystick should also work fine.
Changes
~~~~~~~
v2.21: Oops. High-scores actually work now.
v2.20: Fixed the bomb-sound at last (yay!), added high-score saving.
v2.11: Fixed stupid bug, now it runs from pure DOS. (blame Win98 for it).
v2.10: Fixed a couple of minor bugs, added RAZE Z80 core (big speed-up),
       tweaked frame-skip code, fixed sound skipping, added cool backdrop.
v2.01: Fixed some sound problems, added pause key in fullscreen mode,
       added re-definable keys, added scanlines, fixed coin counter.

v2.00: Complete re-write. Much faster/better/etc (GUI as well).

v1.00: First complete release.

v0.xx: Various experimental releases (varying stages of colour/music/etc).

TNZS technical information
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In case you're interested, here's some info on how the original machine
worked:
   Processor = 2 x Zilog Z80,
             = (8-bit, used in ZX-Spectrum, Sega Master System, etc)
             = 1 x i8742? (the most useless piece of hardware ever)
   Video     = 1 x <unknown, probably Taito custom chip>
             = (512 colours, 512 sprites on screen, scrolling background,
             =  capable of dual-playfield and palette-effects)
   Sound     = 1 x Yamaha YM2203, or 1 x Yamaha YM2610
             = (capable of FM sounds, similiar to an Adlib sound card)
   Control   = 2 x standard joystick (optional),
             = 2 x analogue paddle (optional)
Quite impressive when you consider other games of the time were starting to
use 16-bit CPUs...
Apparently this hardware is also used by *Arkanoid 2 - Revenge of Doh*,
*Insector X*, and several other games as well.
Bugs
~~~~
Known bugs:

   If the game runs *very* slowly, try turning off v-sync, or put frameskip
   on to '1' (manual override).

*Please* report any bugs you find to me (Richard Mitton) at this address:
