Raine est un émulateur Arcade ainsi qu’une excellente alternative à MAME.
Conçu à l’origine pour émuler « Rainbow Islands », il supporte désormais énormément de jeux et davantage de systèmes. Raine est également LE MEILLEUR EMULATEUR NEOGEO CD, c’est dit !
Créé par Antiriad en 1998, A cette époque Raine et Mame se faisaient même une petite gueguerre pour savoir lequel serait le 1er à émuler tel ou tel système ou jeu. Raine a longtemps été le seul à émuler le taito F3. Il a été repris par Tux (un frenchie !) en 2000 lorsque le code source a été disponible. Aidé ponctuellement par de grands noms de la scène de l’émulation comme Haze ou grâce au concours de l’équipe de Zapp!!Raine, cet excellent émulateur Arcade a suivi son bonhomme de chemin depuis lors.
Les différences avec Mame :
– Mame veut tout émuler mais Raine supporte essentiellement les jeux basés sur du z80 et du 680×0 (ce n’était que ça à l’époque des versions Dos et par la suite, Tux a retrouvé un driver qui utilisait un 6502 dans les sources et ne pouvant fonctionner ; Tux a réussi à le corriger puis à l’intégrer à Raine).
– Mame émule de manière précise « Accurate », y compris les défauts pour être + proche de l’original possible et ne cherche pas à améliorer. Raine, quant à lui, c’est le fun avant tout : s’il y a des choses faisables pour améliorer la jouabilité, Raine n’hésite pas une seconde !
– Mame c’est du langage C/C++ ce qui le rend portable alors que Raine c’est avant tout de l’assembleur (ce qui le rend très rapide à l’utilisation). En effet, il fallait être rapide en 98. L’Assembleur est finalement devenu sa marque de fabrique, toujours actuel et fonctionne même sur Mac OS X !
Raine émule également la NeoGeo CD depuis que le projet NeoRaine a été intégré dans Raine. Il inclut également un pack de shaders au format GLSL compatible avec celui disponible pour bsnes (mais pas Higan). En outre vous pouvez utiliser les fichiers: command.dat, highscore.dat, history.dat et tables de transparences, mais également utiliser d’autres outils sur le site officiel de Raine.
Les changements:
 – aes bios support : at least it works, I can’t say I tested it a lot, it seems to completely ignore the dipswitches, but it’s probably normal (probably no dipswitches in these aes cabinets I guess).
 – fixed the day of week for the neogeo calendar displayed when you choose « book keeping » (b+c+d at boot with unibios, and something equivalent with most other bioses I guess…). This clock is completely different from modern clocks in pcs. Nowdays clocks are synchronized using ntp over the network at a scale of 0.001s or sometimes even much less. This one is very unprecise, it increases its seconds everytime the display is updated, except the neogeo display is not exactly 60fps, it’s 59.2 fps approx, so it quickly gets out of sync ! Actually the role of this clock was only to keep track of how many times a given game was played and if continue was used on it, how much time and at which date. No need for a lot of precision for that, but it’s still quite surprising. Not talking about this year on 2 digits only in 199x, but I guess they didn’t actually care about the year at all in this case…
Anyway in raine this clock is initialized from the pc clock when you launch a game so you get the correct date in « book keeping », but I had forgotten the day of week, I thought it was computed, but no, it’s just read as well from the calendar chip. So this one comes also from the pc clock now, so you’ll get a precise calendar now !

 – Hum, except that I played at reproducing the level skipper in bublredux using a raine script for the other bublbobl clones. Oh well, the only thing I didn’t emulate is the sound effect produced when you change the level. It was just to check it can be done very quickly, and indeed, it’s very short to do ! For normal player it means there is a new cheat for all bublbobl clones, « skip this level », completely at the end of the list normally.
